Health authorities of Taiwan have reported until June 12, 2024 a total of 166 cases of dengue indigenous in the country.

The most affected areas are Kaohsiung City (137 cases), Tainan City (19), Pingtung (9) and Chiayi County ( 1 ).

Two of the cases were classified as severe.

In addition, 104 imported cases have been reported, a figure higher than the average of recent years 2020-2023 (3 to 55 cases). Indonesia is the main importing country (55 cases), followed by Malaysia (18) and Maldives (9)

• Taiwan has suffered numerous dengue epidemics in the 20th and 21st centuries, with strong rebounds in 1942, 1981 and 1988, and mostly centered in Kaohsiung (94%) due to the area’s climate, which with more humidity and heat helps to the presence of mosquitoes that spread the disease.
