The strong winds this Monday (06/17/2024) fueled several forest fires that started over the weekend in southern California, United States, including the one in the community of Gorman, located northwest of Los Angeles County and where according to the authorities only 8% is under control.

The accident just north of the city of Los Angeles quickly devastated almost 60 square kilometers of land over the weekend, forcing the evacuation of more than a thousand people camping at a recreational park and also closing a popular lake dedicated to to navigation.

Some 1,150 firefighters are dedicated to containing the so-called ‘post-fire’ and putting out the flames with seven tanker planes and the construction of perimeter lines.

The fire shows “extreme igneous behavior,” warned the National Interagency Fire Center, which highlighted the low visibility and winds of up to 80 kilometers per hour that make the efforts of firefighters useless.

According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), the fire in Gorman, the largest in the entire state.

This Monday, the National Weather Service warned that winds could quickly spread the fire and predicted that areas such as the Antelope Valley and foothills, Santa Barbara County and the Sacramento Valley were at risk of fires.

According to the Cal Fire website, 1,769 wildfires larger than 10 acres (4 hectares) are currently active in the Golden State, including one of 1,190 acres (481 hectares) in Sonoma and 1,131 acres (457 hectares) in San Bernadino.

Specialists have announced that the premature fire season could be a warning of greater tragedies that could happen during the summer.
