Nuevo León on high alert! Possible cyclone will hit hard

Nuevo León is on Maximum Alert due to the development of a meteor that could become a hurricane in the following hours and bring with it extraordinary rains that would not only fill the dams, but would imply the opening of floodgates and flooding in the royal city.

The United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that the system that forms in the Gulf of Mexico has a high probability of becoming a tropical storm.

According to projections, the system is forecast to enter Tamaulipas and make landfall between Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.

However, due to the size of the system, it is expected that the rains will arrive hours before it makes landfall in the Monterrey metropolitan area.

Until the closing of this edition at 01:00, the system maintains maximum sustained winds of up to 64 kilometers per hour.

Given the dangers that the rains that will reach Nuevo León may represent, Governor Samuel García declared a maximum alert and cancellation of classes.

According to the information provided by the state government, this meteorological phenomenon could become a cyclone arriving at noon on Wednesday and Thursday being the strongest day of winds and rain.

“And from 6 a.m. on Thursday to 6 a.m. on Friday we will have 100 millimeters in the city basin, in La Boca, Cerro Prieto, Cuchillo and Libertad. Fortunately, from Friday onwards it will no longer be so intense, but the rains will continue and it is already pure profit.

“But as always in these phenomena in a city as large as the city of Monterrey, there are tragedies that we want to avoid, which is why we ask the population for Maximum Alert!”, the governor pointed out.

Likewise, the state president stressed: “It is an issue that must be taken as seriously as possible. I know that Monterrey dreamed of these rains, seven years of drought, but to give you an idea, a tropical storm can reach winds of 120 km per hour. “The entire population of Nuevo León must be extremely cautious.”

Southern area, with greater risk of flooding

Given the magnitude of the amount of rain that will fall between tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday, the risk of the royal city flooding is latent, with the southern area being the most vulnerable due to the movement of the meteor, while the northern and western areas agree with the risk atlas.

It will rain from 50 to 250 millimeters of rain, according to the forecast of the National Water Commission (Conagua), with the maximum amount expected being the equivalent of almost half the amount of precipitation recorded during the passage of Hurricane Alex in 2010, and two and a half times as much rain as Hurricane Hanna in 2019.

Interviewed by El Horizonte, the meteorologist of the Río Bravo de la Conagua Basin Agency, Dulce Cruz Torres, explained that the meteorological conditions of wind and temperature of the low pressure station that is located in Campeche and that is advancing towards the northwest are ideal for the formation of what would be the first hurricane of the season, which would be named Albert.

Given the conditions of its movement, upon reaching Nuevo León its rains would affect the entire territory, accentuating in the southern part of the state and mountainous areas.

In the metropolitan area of Monterrey, copious and strong rain would not be the exception, with the southern area being where more water could fall, the specialist explained.

Meanwhile, according to the Risk Atlas of each of the metropolitan municipalities of Monterrey, it is in the northern area of the royal city, where the topographic and hydrological conditions due to the presence of plains and basins that the area is most vulnerable.
