LONDON.- Activists from the environmental group ‘Just Stop Oil’ sprayed stonehenge with orange paint, the most famous prehistoric structure in the United Kingdom in protest against the use of fossil fuels in the world.

The event occurs one day before the summer solstice, the date on which crowds gather at Stonehenge to witness the phenomenon.

Around 12:00 pm (local time) two environmentalists from the group ‘Just Stop Oil’ sprayed the Stonehenge monument with orange paint as part of their protests in various parts of the world against the use of fossil fuels.

“Just Stop Oil protesters demanded that the incoming government sign a legally binding treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030,” the group wrote in its social networks.

The activists who sprayed paint on the monument in Salisburyin the southwest of Englandwere a student of oxford21 years old, and a man of Birmingham73 years old.

Both protesters were detained by Wiltshire Police “on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument”.

English Heritagewhich manages the archaeological site, confirmed the incident and reported that work is already underway to measure the damage.

“Orange powder paint was thrown against several stones at Stonehenge. “This is obviously extremely disturbing and our curators are investigating the extent of the damage,” she reported.

On its website it stressed that “Stonehenge is a World Heritage Site, a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is considered by many to be a sacred place.”

“We ask that all attendees respect it and those who celebrate around it,” he adds.

The protest at Stonehenge joins several similar ones by the ‘Just Stop Oil’ group in various parts of the world in their demand to stop the use of fossil fuels due to the serious environmental damage they cause.

Last May, two protesters from the group broke the glass that protected the Magna Cartaa famous 13th century British manuscript, in the British Museum, London.

Their first protests included throwing orange paint at works of art such as the Mona Lisa and ‘The sunflowers’ of Van Gogh.

Regarding the incident at Stonehenge, Rishi SunakBritish Prime Minister wrote on social media that “Just Stop Oil is a disgrace.”

“The orange corn flour we use will soon rain away, but the urgent need for effective government action to mitigate the catastrophic consequences of the climate and ecological crisis will not,” the group responded.
