When did Serbia start playing independently? This is how Yugoslavia broke up in several countries

Last June 16 Serbia played its first match in a European Championship with this name. Although the Serbian players are not the first time they have participated in a continental event. Under other names, footballers of this nationality have played in a European Championship. In fact, Until this event in Germany, Serbian players had participated in five continental national team events and had achieved good performancesmainly like Yugoslavia.

Precisely, as a Yugoslav team it was present in four events (1960, 1968, 1976 and 1984). In the 1960s editions they were proclaimed runners-up, in the 1976 edition they placed fourth and did not advance beyond the first round in 1984. They could have participated a fifth time, in 1992, but a United Nations resolution due to the War of the Balkans, which affected Serbia among other territories that were part of Yugoslavia, were not allowed to participate. That absence caused Denmark to go to that Euro Cup, which emerged champion. This would have been the last opportunity to have participated as Yugoslavia.

Although in the 2000 event, it also used that nomenclature, in reality it was only made up of Serbian and Montenegrin players, but the name of Serbia and Montenegro was temporarily not adopted in 2003. With this name it did not manage to qualify for any Euro Cup and in 2007, After the independence of Montenegro it began to be officially called Serbia and until this 2024 edition it had not managed to qualify for a European team event.
