Coxabengoa is awarded the construction of the largest desalination plant in Taiwan

Coxabengoa, utilities global vertically integrated water and energy company, reinforces its position in the water desalination sector by winning the award of phase 1 of what will be the largest desalination plant in Taiwan, with a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters per day, located in Tainan, a city in the south of Taiwan, reports in a note.

With this capacity, the plant will be able to supply drinking water to one million people, in a country with a great need for water for human consumption, as well as satisfy the water needs for the semiconductor industry on the island.

The project contemplates the execution and operation for 15 years of a seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant for the Southern Region Water Resources Branch, Water Resources Agency, Ministry of economic Affairs (Taiwan), as the final client.

The construction and start-up of the plant, which will employ 200 people at the time of greatest intensity of the process, will be carried out in two phases. In phase 1, the capacity to supply 100,000 cubic meters of water per day will be reached and it will be prepared for the second phase in which 200,000 cubic meters will be reached.

In addition to the awarding of the desalination plant in Taiwan, Coxabengoa has put into operation one of the great milestones in the sector. This is Taweelah, the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in the world, located in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). With a production of almost one million cubic meters per day, Taweelah guarantees supply to approximately four and a half million people throughout the year. It is also the first large-scale plant in the emirate that combines the production of drinking water with the generation of clean energy, thanks to the installation of a 70 MWp photovoltaic installation, which allows the desalination plant to be self-sufficient in renewable energy. .

Since the award of Abengoa’s assets by Grupo Cox in April 2023, the Coxabengoa team has worked to reorganize the business and assets and transform the company into a utilities global water and energy. Thus, the infrastructure/transmission lines areas have been integrated, together with the Operation and Maintenance area, to support the Group’s main businesses.
