Among the Group races held at the Royal Ascot meeting, there is one very particular and special one that is always the center of attention: the Gold Cup (2 ½ Miles, $825,500, grass). In this 2024 edition, emotions shook the racecourse facilities when the favorite Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo (Ire)) crossed the finish line first for the second time, thanks to the energetic riding of Ryan Moore.
This Gr.1 Gold Cup was full of adrenaline and suspense from the moment it started, when Godolphin’s horse, Trawlerman (Ire) (Golden Horn (GB) driven by William Buick, took the lead without any problem. passing for the first time in front of the public that received the contenders with cheers, almost 1,200 meters had already passed and the lead was still with this horse, which during its gallop did not show any signs of exhaustion.

Like a game of chess, the Gold Cup Gr.1 requires a lot of strategy, and Ryan Moore, with the patience of a saint, reserved Kyprios’ (Ire) energy throughout the course, placing him third during the first 1,000 meters and then when they headed towards the first of the three straights that the Ascot track has, he moved to the second and began to chase Trawlerman (Ire). Some of the other participants, such as Gregory (GB) (Golden Horn (GB)) and Caius Chorister (Fr) (Golden Horn (GB)), were looking for a better place in the compact group, behind the two horses that stole the show.
A surprising move by Caius Chorister’s (Fr) rider, Benoit De La Sayette, placed his mount very close to Trawlerman (Ire) to fight him for the lead position in the second straight, but he paid his price before the final elbow, losing strength to make way for Trawlerman (Ire) and Kyprios (Ire), who staged an epic battle throughout the final stretch.
Both riders, Buick on Trawlerman (Ire) and Moore on the back of Kyprios (Ire), put on a top show, probably the most exciting of all the events that have been contested until this race. Trawlerman (Ire) seemed like he would not give in, but Kyprios (Ire)’s strength was much greater and near the mirror he took a length off him, finishing with a time of 4:18.07. Sweet William (Ire) (Sea the Stars (Ire)) was third and fourth was Vauban (Fr) (Galiway (GB)).
Kyprios (Ire) won this race in 2022. The descendant of Galileo (Ire) in Polished Gem (Ire) by Danehill, he is owned by the partnership between Moyglare, Magnier, Tabor, Smith and Westerberg. At six years old he has fifteen performances for eleven first and remains undefeated in the distance of 4,000 meters: 3-3. Ryan Moore consolidates himself as the jockey with the most wins in the modern era of Royal Ascot with 82 and Aidan O’Brien has his 88th winner historically, in addition to his ninth win in the race.
