The Government of Taiwan condemned that China’s “dangerous actions” against the Philippines after the latest incident between ships from both countries in the South China Sea, which has “maliciously” raised “regional tensions.”

These statements come after the incident that occurred last Monday in waters adjacent to the Second Thomas Atoll, claimed by the two countries, during which The Philippine Army accused the Chinese coast guard of seriously injuring one of its sailors“deliberately drilling” their inflatable boats and “looting” their weapons.

For its part, the Philippine Army released videos and photographs that reflected how The Chinese coast guard surrounded the Philippine supply ships and they took up sharp objects to pierce them and intimidate the crew.

“Our country will continue to cooperate with regional allies and like-minded nations to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” said the island’s Foreign Ministry.

The activity of the Chinese coast guard in Taiwan

In recent months, Taiwan denounced the growing activity of the Chinese coast guard in its archipelagosespecially around the Kinmen Islands, which are located a few kilometers off the coast of China.

As explained at the time by the Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (CGA), Between February and May, Chinese Coast Guard vessels invaded the “prohibited and restricted waters”” around the Kinmen an average of five times a month, claiming that they have the right to patrol this area.

In a press conference, the deputy director general of the CGA, Hsieh Ching-chin, assured last Wednesday that the new regulation implemented last Saturday by China, which allows its coast guard to board and detain vessels in waters it claims“will not affect law enforcement” by the Taiwanese Coast Guard.

In this sense, the official stressed that CGA will vigorously defend the rights and interests of Taiwanese fishing vesselsas well as “national sovereignty” and “maritime security.”
