After meeting the first members who will make up Claudia Sheinbaum’s cabinet, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador I celebrate the appointment of Marcelo Ebrard as head of the Ministry of Economy (SE).

“First, I must say that the appointments that were made yesterday are very good; the president-elect knew how to choose well public servants, women and men, for the positions, who guarantee continuity with change,” he said at the morning conference on June 21.

“Everyone he named is very good, they are very experienced,” he guaranteed.

He recognized that Ebrard has extensive experience in economic and political issuesbecause during his tenure in the Foreign Ministry he was responsible for making ‘approaches with the United States government to have the new trade agreement signed.’

The mandatary considered that Ebrard’s management was very favorable for the economy of Mexico, because investment levels have been favored.

“Marcelo Ebrard (…) has a lot of experience, he is going (…) on instructions from the president to take charge of maintaining the economic and trade policy with the United States government, it is very important,” he said.

“That is why foreign investment has grown like never before in the country, these are record figures,” he added.

López Obrador is confident that the next appointments to Claudia Sheinbaum’s cabinet will also be prominent figures.

“All the appointments from yesterday were very good and those who come will surely be like this,” he added.

What positions has Marcelo Ebrard held?

These are the political positions that Marcelo Ebrard has held:

  • Marcelo Ebrard began his political career in the PRI, specifically the Planning and Budget Secretariat of Mexico City.
  • He served in positions such as general direction of the Department of the Federal Districtas well as general secretary of the PRI in the country’s capital and in the undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, specifically between the eighties and nineties.
  • In 1995 he decided to separate from the PRI, and In 1997 he won a federal seat with the Green Party, although he resigned from this in 1998 and founded a party together with Camacho: the Democratic Center Party, which did not maintain registration for more than three years.
  • At the end of his career as a deputy, Ebrard allied himself with López Obrador, the then winner of the elections for head of government of the then Federal District.
