Darwin Núñez’s career with the Uruguayan national team has been boosted since Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at the helm of La Celeste, and the statistics back up his growth.
“He is a player who does not need any kind of support. The only thing that worries me is that he is in a position to do what he does so extraordinarily, score as many times as possible,” said Loco when defining the player who was trained in Peñarol, who he framed from the beginning as the starting number nine of the national team.
It was the Argentine who decided to give him his place as the undisputed center forward of the celestial team, at a time when Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani, despite their age, continue to demonstrate their scoring quality.
To understand the privileged position he was given, in the nine games he was called up to the national team he was a starter in all of them, and that became a full house of confidence for the man from Artigas.
So much so that in this era of La Celeste he has scored 10 goals, with the particularity that he celebrated in the last seven games.
“All the players who are long-term goal scorers, not those who score goals from time to time, do so because they know how to finish. Then, they are human and have cycles,” said Bielsa.
Tabarez and Alonso
Núñez made his debut for the national team in October 2019, in a friendly against Peru (1-1), where he started scoring, during the time of Óscar Washington Tabárez at the helm of Uruguay.
There were times when Suárez and Cavani were the priority, so he had to find his place from the bench on some occasions, and on others occupying offensive positions as a winger.
Under the Maestro’s mandate, the 25-year-old footballer saw action in six games, starting only one, and scored twice.
After the departure of Tabárez, Diego Alonso arrived at the celestial team, and with it the final stretch of the Qualifiers and the World Cup in Qatar, with the Liverpool player already gaining space in the Celeste.
With the Tornado he was on the field in 10 games, seven of them from the start, but he only managed to score one goal in a friendly against Canada.
That is to say, between the two coaches who preceded Bielsa, Darwin Núñez had 16 appearances, with three goals, a much lower average than the current one.
There are thirteen celebrations of the Artiguense in the Uruguayan team so far, in 25 games played, which is equivalent to one goal every 173 minutes.
