06/28/2024, Xalapa, Ver.- “Sexual freedom is an essential right and its full understanding and application constitute a triumph of liberal and democratic principles,” said Martín Aguilar Sánchez, rector of the Universidad Veracruzana (UV), at the institutional event “With pride, love who you are” 2024, which took place at Casa del Lago.

The Rector mentioned that the achievements of sexual diversities have made their way into the areas of professional, political, legal and cultural life, and show that there are many ways to inhabit one’s own body and create a personal narrative around sexuality.

“The binary division to which we are accustomed excludes other completely valid experiences, and reinforces stereotypes that prevent a large number of people from gaining a free place in society,” he said.

Martín Aguilar commented that the UV supports groups that defend the rights of people with diverse identity, gender expression and sexual characteristics, with the aim of spreading a culture of peace, respect and tolerance.

She explained that since its first edition in 2022, “With Pride Love Who You Are” has proposed listening, thinking and debating issues of sexual diversity, and how these open up new areas of criticism of normative regimes instituted in a dualistic way, in addition to other approaches on the relationship between body and mind, nature and culture.

“I congratulate those who participate in the program, because they promote spaces where the world is seen as it is, full of different demands and diverse experiences,” he said.

Anabel Ojeda Gutiérrez, coordinator of the Gender Unit, shared that among the institutional advances of the UV in favor of the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community, one year after the publication of the guidelines for updating data for recognition of sex-gender identity, this area has supported 12 procedures to guarantee the free development of personality, equality and non-discrimination.

He also mentioned the artistic presentation Salsa pride and the poster samples Gender equity and sexual diversity and Diversity and inclusion at UV.

As well as the creation of digital albums Lesbians in history and Contemporary lesbiansan LGBTIQ+ glossary and the body graphics workshop “Fighting with strokes”, which was led by students from the Faculty of Plastic Arts.

Rocío López Lara, a researcher at the Public Health Institute, shared that, according to figures from an online questionnaire, 78% of members of the university community define themselves as heterosexual, 11.9% as bisexual, and 4.1% as homosexual.

“It is important that all entities and departments of the UV recognize sexual diversity and avoid discriminatory behavior,” he emphasized.

The event was also attended by Juan Ortiz Escamilla, Lizbeth Viveros Cancino and Jaqueline Jongitud Zamora, Academic, Administration and Finance, and Institutional Development secretaries, respectively; managers, coordinators, teachers and students.
