Who was Saint Ladislaus, the most important Saint of Sunday, June 30?
The Saints of the Catholic Church today especially remember Saint Ladislaus who was born in Krakow, Poland, in the year 1040. He spent his childhood and youth in an environment full of political and dynastic intrigues. In 1077 Władysław was named king of Hungary.
His royal rights were then denied by his half-brother Solomon. He took up arms against him, but was defeated on the battlefield by the Hungarian sovereign.
His fervent piety was expressed in his zeal for his faith, in the fulfillment of his religious duties, his strict morals and the austerity of his life. He stripped himself of all personal ambition, and only accepted the dignity that had been placed on his back.
He had to endure numerous invocations by barbarian tribes whom he triumphantly defeated. He also devoted all his efforts to making them aware of Christianity. He died in Bohemia at the beginning of 1095 at the age of 55.
