Although many of us could agree on the factors that made “Law & Order” stay on the air for more than 30 years, Reid Scott (New York, 1977) has his own explanation. To be more precise, the actor has his own history as a fan of the police series that Dick Wolf created back in September 1990, and which today has him as the protagonist.

Called for the 23rd season of this cult police film, Scott did not hesitate for a minute to accept the role of Detective Vincent Riley. Beyond the possibility of chasing bandits under a tone of seriousness and the exact dose of sarcasm, the New York interpreter had the opportunity to fulfill that dream that persecuted him from the beginning: to be part of a proposal that has managed to attract followers by maintaining faithful to a pattern that seems simple, although it is very effective.

BEHIND A DREAM THAT IS REALITY TODAY

First broadcast in November 1990, “Law & Order” is a crime series that addresses dramatic cases from two points of view. The first is expressed by the police, who arrive first at the scene of a crime, collect clues and search for suspects. Immediately afterwards, attention shifts to the State prosecutors, in charge of supporting the weight of the evidence collected before a judge and a court. Both elements are very well distributed throughout each episode, as if it were two series in one.

That first team, the police, has been joined by Scott, who confesses with a smile on his face how much this creation of Dick Wolf meant in his first years as an actor. “25 years ago,”Law & Order” was ‘THE SHOW’ in which one wanted to act as a young actor, but I never had the chance. All of this made accepting the role of Vincent Riley a fairly easy decision,” he says in a press conference to which Skip Intro of El Comercio had exclusive access.

While the police officer was establishing himself first on American television and then internationally, Scott was charting his own path, appearing in projects such as “Veep” or “The Big C.” Each of these proposals allowed him to form a television personality that does not go unnoticed. This is what he has tried to apply to his detective character in the series broadcast by Universal TV in Latin America.

“I tried to add some of my sense of humor to the character, make it sarcastic, dark and a little sleazy. All of that comes from me. I am a person who also likes to solve puzzles and problems. And television is all about that, making the impossible possible. So, playing this detective is something that totally identifies me,” he says.

DECIPHERING THE KEY TO SUCCESS

If the scheme of police and prosecutors dividing the work of prosecuting crime in the ‘Big Apple’ seems basic, what could explain the success of “Law & Order” over almost 34 years? The original NBC series has prevailed by relying not only on talented actors with their personal mark – from Jerry Orbach to George Dzundza, through Chris Noth or Odelya Halevi – but by addressing themes that, in Scott’s opinion, are as complex as current.

“They created a very genuine and authentic program, that hits hard, that touches on real issues and offers them to the audience in a way that they could not receive them through other means. There aren’t many programs like that. Dick Wolf and his team have made several other versions of this type and that is even more incredible. Their first objective is to educate, to be authentic, and also to entertain, of course, but I think to entertain in the right way,” he maintains.

Two good examples that condense the essence that characterizes this cult series can be seen in the first episodes of season 23. In the first, detectives Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brook) and Vincent Riley (Reid Scott) immerse themselves in the middle of a protest pro-Palestine university to find the person responsible for the crime of a controversial rector who also signed the dismissal of several teachers. Social networks emerge as if they were another weapon when some of the protesters against Israeli foreign policy accuse the police of harassing them, something that does not actually happen, but which partially dents the image of the New York Police.

In the second chapter the bet revolves around ‘Deepfakes’ and artificial intelligence. The crime of one of the ‘conceited people of Silicon Valley’ becomes more entangled than expected when one of those investigated produces – like an ace up his sleeve – a video that initially seems genuine, but will soon be distorted by the prosecutors themselves. . “This job was already difficult when we knew the difference between what was real and what was fake. But what about now?” asks a disgruntled Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy).

A MULTIFACETED ACTOR AND FUTURE PROSPECTS FOR THE SERIES

The defense of beliefs and the excesses of artificial intelligence are topics that, due to their validity, generate, at least, attention from the viewing public. That formula added to a small, although solvent, cast, as well as sound effects consistent with police classics, make up a universe that could expand even beyond the already confirmed season 24.

“They found the key and there is no reason for this to change. The formula of taking real topics that one sees in the news and bringing them to fiction just a few weeks later, with everything very fresh and, furthermore, doing it in an interesting and intriguing way. The audience will never get bored of that and I think the series will continue for a long time,” he says. Reid Scott a Skip Enter.

The 46-year-old actor has just worked on “The Idea of You”, the successful romantic comedy that Prime Video premiered a few weeks ago with Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine as protagonists. In the story, his character is diametrically opposed to Detective Vincent Riley. In just a few months, the artist will go from playing a macho ex-husband (Daniel) to a man of the law who seeks to give everyone what they deserve.

Reid Scott played Caesar in “The Idea of You,” Prime Video’s latest romantic comedy starring Anne Hathaway.

“Vincent is completely different from Daniel, but that is one of the best things about acting, the fact of having to take on very different characters from one job to another. I like challenges, and especially one like playing someone you could hate, and making it as real as possible,” he considers.

While we wait for the cast of season 24 of “Law & Order” to be defined, Latin America will be able to see season 23 with Reid Scott in the leading role and under one of the most successful and long-lasting formulas on contemporary television. All through Universal TV.
