Is Not One More, the most watched series on Netflix, based on real events? – La Dorrego AM 1470

Shortly after arriving on Netflix, Not One More became the most watched series on the platform. Behind her were Bridgerton, Reindeer Baby, The Asunta Case and Eric, the brand new premiere with Benedict Cumberbatch as the protagonist.

Not one more, a Spanish production of 8 episodes of an average of 40 minutes each and tells a story of bullying and sexual abuse in a secondary school. It is an adaptation of the 2021 novel of the same name by Miguel Sáez Carral that has the author himself as showrunner.

The series has a similar structure to Elite. If that fiction began each season with a murder and then went back in time so that we found out who killed the victim, Not one more begins with a fierce accusation and then travels to the past so that we discover why whoever did it did it.

At the beginning of the story – this is not a spoiler – Alma, a troubled 17-year-old girl, hangs a sign on the door of the school she attends that reads: “Be careful. A rapist is hiding in there.” Then the plot goes back five months in time.

The cast of Not One More is made up of Nicole Wallace (My Fault), Clara Galle (Through… trilogy), Gabriel Guevara (My Fault), Iván Massagué (The Hole) and Eloy Azorín (All About My Mother), among others .

Not one more is based on real events?
The answer is no. But there is an interesting fact behind the origin of the story.

In an interview for the newspaper El País, Sáez Carral said that he wrote the novel inspired by his relationship with his teenage daughter. It was a way to get closer to her, since at the time of writing it, in 2019, they did not have the best of relationships.

The first draft reflected “a complaint from a father to a daughter,” and that did not convince Sáez Carral. When he saw the final result he believed that he should put himself in the young woman’s shoes and add her point of view. That correction gave the story its final shape.

“I began to examine myself and look for my daughter’s things that had value. I realized that she was a very brave girl, who had an enormous sense of justice. They were two values that deserved me to change my point of view,” Sáez Carral acknowledged.

“My daughter is now 20 years old and we were very friends, until she became a somewhat conflictive teenager. At least that’s how I perceived it. We had a very bad relationship for a long time, with many daily conflicts,” the author confessed.

And he added: “We parents often want our children to follow the path we have laid out for them in our heads. And children don’t have to fit that mold.”

The series is a little about that: about how the parents of the young people act motivated by fear and how the young people react to an extreme situation like the one proposed by the protagonist at the beginning of the story.

Finally, Sáez Carral and her daughter were able to rebuild their relationship during the pandemic. He considers that the two have “matured.” (Clarion). (06-16-24).
