The introduction scene of ‘The House of the Dragon’ has changed from the first season. It keeps the music, the same main theme that Ramin Djawadi composed for ‘Game of Thrones’, but everything else has been changed. While in the original a bloodline ran through Viserys’ model of High Valyria, season 2 tells the history of the dynasty from its origins in the cursed city. The idea of blood, crucial for the succession of kings, continues to be embedded in the opening concept. The main difference is that the creatives have chosen capture history through a tapestry that is stained with blood.

The sequence begins with a depiction of Old Valyria, the ancestral home of the Targaryens and Velaryons. At that time, thousands of dragons flew over the sky, until a cataclysm destroyed everything. The two families escaped their fate, still with some dragons in their possession. Thus, the Targaryens retreated to Dragonstone, birthplace of Aegon the Conqueror. This character appears portrayed in the tapestry, as he is a key figure in the history of Westeros. On the back of Belarion, the Black Terror, Aegon I Targaryen subjugated the Seven Queens and was crowned king of the Andals and the First Men. The dragons Belarion, Meraxes and Vhagar – the latter still lives at the time of ‘The House of the Dragon’ -, symbols of the power of the Targaryen house, appear embroidered on the tapestry.
The kings followed one another and the long reign of Jaehaerys Targaryen arrived, whose succession was decided in a conclave: Rhaenys, the queen who never was, was discarded in favor of her cousin Viserys The Pacific. In the end, the tapestry outlines the scene that precipitates the conflict of the Dance of the Dragons: The murder of Prince Lucerys Velaryon, son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, at the hands of his uncle Aemond and his dragon Vhagar.
