“Humanity is acting like the delinquent son of Mother Earth,” said the high representative regarding that International Day.

These actions, he added in his message for the date, harm nature and humanity while endangering food production, polluting the oceans and air, creating a more dangerous environment and slowing down sustainable development.

Guterres called to restore harmony with nature, embrace sustainable production and consumption, and protect from harm.

To this end, he urged to create jobs, reduce poverty and promote sustainable development along this route.

“That means suddenly stopping the loss of biodiversity, ending pollution and drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions worldwide,” he stressed.

At the same time, he urged support for indigenous peoples, local communities and others most affected by the climate and biodiversity crises.

The head of the organization called for providing climate justice to countries that are on the front lines and quickly mobilizing the financing and support they need to protect nature and promote sustainable development.

Nations must draw up new national climate plans that align with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, he said.

In that sense, he assured that the G20 must lead a rapid, fair and financed global elimination of fossil fuels, and put an end to subsidies that destroy nature, such as those that finance the uncontrolled production of plastics that suffocate the planet.

«Repairing relationships with Mother Earth is at the center of all humanity’s challenges. We must act – and act now – to create a better future for all of us,” she concluded.
