The crime became known after the police were found calcined inside a patrol on route P72S near the town of Cañete, 500 km south of Santiago, an area that is under military surveillance for several arson attacks that are linked to the Mapuche community.

Likewise, investigators estimate that, once the murders were carried out, the attackers drove the patrol car to the place where the discovery took place and set fire to the vehicle with the bodies inside. According to the media Bío Bío Chile, residents of the area said they heard the shots like “bursts”, which is why it is believed that the perpetrators used automatic weapons. Furthermore, the witnesses pointed out that the choice of the place was not a coincidence, since it is a location with roads that could facilitate escape.

After the massacre, President Gabriel Boric asked for “additional reinforcement” to the Armed Forces to “cover risk areas” in the south of Chile, especially the area where the police crime took place. This was announced this Monday by the Government’s spokesperson minister, Camila Vallejo. “We are talking about qualified life imprisonment. “We do not hesitate to use the most effective weapons and tools so that there is justice and no impunity,” said the official.
