The crime became known after the police were found calcined inside a patrol on route P72S near the town of Cañete, 500 km south of Santiago, an area that is under military surveillance for several arson attacks that are linked to the Mapuche community.

After the massacre, President Gabriel Boric asked for “additional reinforcement” to the Armed Forces to “cover risk areas” in the south of Chile, especially the area where the police crime took place.
