One day Saylor Class, a 3-year-old girl, began to complain that there were monsters in her room on the farm in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she lived with her parents.

But the mother, Ashley Massis Class, and her husband thought nothing of it. They thought it had to do with the fact that the girl had just seen the Pixar movie Monsters Inc.

“We even gave him a bottle of water and told him it was monster spray, so he could scare away the monsters at night,” the woman explains.

But over the next few months, Saylor increasingly insisted that there was something in her closet.

It started to make more sense when Massis realized there was swarms of bees near the attic and in the fireplace of his century-old house.

They thought Saylor might be hearing the buzzing near the ceiling of her bedroom.

The girl’s mother called a pest control company who discovered that the insects were honey bees, a protected species in the United States.

The family contacted a beekeeper, who noticed that the insects were heading towards the wooden floor of the attic, just above their daughter’s bedroom.

The bees had passed eight months building a gigantic hive.

The “monster hunter”

The beekeeper brought a thermal camera to scan the walls of the three-year-old girl’s bedroom.

“Everything lit up like Christmas,” the woman said.

The beekeeper, who located a coin-sized hole in the corner of an attic vent, said he had never seen a hive like it, reaching so far into the wall.

The man – whom the girl began to call “monster hunter”- He opened the wall and discovered a large honeycomb.

“They poured out like in a horror movie,” explains the mother.

The beekeeper extracted some 65,000 bees and 45 kg of honeycomb.

To do this, three extractions were carried out by vacuuming the insects from the wall to put them in boxes. The insects have been relocated to a bee sanctuary.

The little girl’s mother has had to cover the room with plastic to prevent the bees from roaming around her house.

The bees and their honey have damaged the electrical wiring in the house. The family says their home insurance does not cover anything related to pests because they consider it avoidable.

He estimates that the bees have caused more than US$20,000 in damages.
