They baptize a street in Santiago de Chile with the name of Elisa Escobar

This is one of the victims of the so-called Conference Street case, an operation mounted by agents of Augusto Pinochet’s secret police to exterminate the clandestine national leadership of the CCP.

The mayor of Santiago, Irací Hassler, declared that with this tribute to Elisa Escobar we remember those who fell into the saddest moments in history for thinking differently and wanting democracy in the country.

We hope that with this name change, future generations can know who was a fighting, hard-working woman who had dreams and convictions and who is present in the neighborhood commune and capital of Santiago, said Hassler.

Renaming this avenue is part of the municipality’s program to recognize local people who were victims of the dictatorship (1973-1990), on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the coup d’état.

Operation Conference Street involved the kidnapping, torture and disappearance, in addition to Elisa Escobar, of the also communist leaders Jorge Muñoz, Víctor Díaz, Mario Zamorano, Jaime Donato and Uldarico Donaire.

According to reports published here, the total number of officially classified victims of the Pinochet regime is more than 40 thousand, including murdered, disappeared, prisoners and tortured, not counting the 200 thousand exiles.

To this day the whereabouts of more than a thousand people are unknown.
