Deputies of the Parliamentary Committee of the Communist Party, Humanist Action and Social Green Regionalist Federation, They sent a letter to president Gabriel Boric, to request that he rule on the request for freedom of Julian Assange.

Let us remember that between 2010 and 2011, the Wikileaks portal exposed alleged US war crimes in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, in addition to revealing various violations of civil liberties committed by various governments.

In this regard, the parliamentarians asked the president to adhere to the request for Julian Assange’s freedom, as other Latin American presidents have done, considering his humanitarian situation.

“Considering that the thirty-first World Press Freedom Day Conference was recently held in our country, the Parliamentary Committee of the Communist Party, Humanist Action and Social Green Regionalist Federation, requests Your Excellency, President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, adhere to the request for Julian Assange’s freedom,” they indicate in the letter.

“Several presidents from around the world, and particularly in Latin America, have joined this request; President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President Gustavo Petro, President Andrés López Obrador and President Xiomara Castro have expressly done so. among others”, they highlight.

It should be noted that although human rights organizations denounce Assange’s legal situation as an attack on press freedom, Washington affirms that the Australian endangered the lives of numerous informants by publishing complete unredacted documents.

“As a result, he was subject to persecution by the United States government, which accused him of the crime of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion,” they accuse.

“By decision of former Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno, he lost his asylum status and was violently detained by the British police in London, to be held in a prison where he remains until now, for which he has been deprived of liberty for 14 years,” they add.

“On May 20, the hearing is set where his extradition to the United States will be decided, which, if effective, means being transferred to the State of Virginia where he risks 175 years in prison or the death penalty. For its part, the Government of Australia, with the support of all members of that country’s parliament, request the unconditional freedom of Julian Assange,” they accuse.

In that sense, the communist deputy, Carmen Hertz, He highlighted that Julian Assange “is emblematic of the need for press freedom, for journalism that feels safe.”

“We, as a committee of the Communist Party, Green Regionalist Federation, Humanist Action and Independents, requested through a letter today to President Gabriel Boric to adhere to this request,” he said.

“We ask that the President bend to demand the freedom of Julian Assange,” insisted deputy Carmen Hertz.
