“There is no lack of puppies, there is a lack of children”: Pope Francis urges investing in birth rates

Pope Francis asked this Friday to implement “effective” options in favor of the family so that, for example, a mother does not have to choose “between work and caring for children” or not to “discard” grandparents. , something he considered “cultural suicide.”

In the fourth edition of the States General of Birth, an event taking place in Rome, Italy, the pontiff said that there is an urgent need for “brave, concrete and long-term options” and “a greater commitment on the part of all governments” in favor of the family.

Francisco asserted that the world’s problem “is not that children are born” because “they are not the root of pollution, of hunger, of the lack of resources.”

From his point of view, the problems are “the choices of those who only think about themselves, the delirium of an unbridled, blind and rampant materialism, of a consumerism that, like a malignant virus, erodes the existence of people from the roots and of the society”.

“There is no shortage of dogs, cats, there is a shortage of children”

The pontiff lamented that currently “the investments that provide the most income are the weapons factory and contraceptives.” “One destroys life, the other prevents life,” he stressed.

“It is not children, but selfishness that creates injustices and structures of sin, to the point of weaving unhealthy interdependencies between social, economic and political systems,” he reiterated.

Francisco commented that “homes are filled with objects and emptied of children, becoming very sad places.” “There is no shortage of dogs, cats. These are not missing. There is a lack of children,” he deplored.

Finally, he considered that the “other very important part” in building the future are the grandparents. “Today there is a culture of hiding grandparents, of sending them to the residence,” he condemned.

“Grandparents alone. Grandparents discarded. This is cultural suicide,” he said, while clarifying that “the future is made by the young and the old, together.”
