RAMALLAH, Palestine

Israel has detained 80 Palestinian journalists since the beginning of its attack on the Gaza Strip on October 7, the Palestinian Prisoners Society indicated this Sunday, June 2.

Some 49 journalists remain in Israeli custody, including four female reporters, the NGO said in a statement.

“The occupation authorities are intensifying their policy of arresting journalists, along with threats, physical attacks and ongoing legal proceedings,” he added.

The NGO warned that detained journalists “are subjected to retaliatory and punitive measures, including torture, humiliation, starvation and systematic medical neglect.”

He called on all international human rights institutions “to fulfill their responsibilities regarding the crimes committed by the Israeli occupation against prisoners and detainees.”

At least 147 journalists and media professionals have been killed by Israel since October 7, 2023, according to Palestinian figures.

Israel launched a brutal offensive against the Gaza Strip in which more than 36,400 people have died, the vast majority of whom were women and children, and more than 82,600 others have died, according to local health authorities.

Almost eight months after the start of the Israeli attack, vast areas of Gaza lie in ruins amid the crippling Israeli blockade of food, clean water and medicine.

Israel is accused of genocide before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), whose latest ruling ordered Tel Aviv to immediately stop its operation in Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians had sought refuge from the war.
