Port-au-Prince (EFE).- The Presidential Transition Council made official the appointment of Garry Conille as Prime Minister of Haiti with the delivery of an extension of the decree in which he was designated for the position, which authorizes him to begin the training process of government.

In an event at the Prime Minister’s Office in Port-au-Prince, the president of the Council in charge of the transition, Edgard Leblanc Fils, said in a brief speech that this enables Conille to begin the process of forming the Government, “in agreement and in consultation” with said institution.

According to Leblanc Fils, all of this “occurs at a particularly difficult time,” when the country is immersed in a multidimensional crisis, which is why “it is important that the driving forces of the nation, particularly the political actors, work with concerted action, consensus and harmony to make this transition a success.”

Conille must get Haiti going

He stated that he is counting on the new prime minister to implement the appropriate policies, together with the Presidential Transition Council, and to address the problem of insecurity, turn around the country’s economy, reform institutions and hold “credible” elections. “democratic and free” by the end of 2025.

“Things won’t be easy”

For his part, Gary Conille, to whom Leblanc Fils wished “great success,” said in his speech that he is aware that “things will not be easy.”

After assessing that “the political groups have put aside their differences at a time when they understand that the interests of the nation demand it,” Conille assured: “We have to take into account that there will be moments in which we will not agree on certain points. But, based on the conversations I have had in recent weeks, I can guarantee you that we will be able to reach an agreement.

He indicated that the president of the Council, when meeting with him, warned him that “there is an emergency” and that the first thing that institution told him was: “We have to act very quickly (…), we have no time to waste.”

“I am very proud to be part of this group. I hope we can work together in the interest of our country,” she stressed.

Last Thursday, in his first message after his appointment, Conille – until now regional director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for Latin America and the Caribbean and who was already prime minister of Haiti between 2011 and 2012 during the mandate of Michel Martelly – committed to working with the Presidential Council to resolve the problems facing the country.

Conille arrived in Haiti last Saturday and on Sunday he visited the center of the capital in an armored vehicle accompanied by the police, in order to verify the damage caused by armed gangs that terrorize the country.
