The mayor of the Mexican municipality of Cotija, Yolanda Sánchez Figueroahas been murdered, reported this Monday the Secretary of Government of the state of Michoacán.
“He Government of Michoacan condemns the murder of the municipal president of Cotija, Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa“, wrote the organization in its account xwhile ensuring that “a security operation coordinated with federal agencies has been deployed to find those responsible for the incident.”
According to preliminary reports, an armed group repeatedly opened fire on the mayor as she entered a gym in the Javier Mina streetnear the Cotija Main Square, local media report. She was accompanied by one of her bodyguards, who was injured while trying to defend her from the attack.
Last year, the mayor was kidnapped by an armed group of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The official and two relatives were kidnapped in the city of Zapopan when they left a shopping center to go to their hotel.
Days later she was released. Then, the security authorities reported that as a result of an operation the woman was located in good health in the town of Villamarin Michoacan.
