What is a sommelier?

A sommelier It is a person with knowledge, studies and experience in beverages, especially wines. Includes other liquors, distillates and infusions.

As an interesting historical fact, the sommelier comes from the Middle Ages, specifically in France. It transported products from the lords’ field, using pack animals or Somme animaux. Later, in the year 1318, its work was redefined at the service of royalty and nobility. They tasted the wine to make sure it was not poisoned.

Currently they are a very important figure in restaurants, bars, tourist stays, hotels and other establishments, whose essential function is to guide customers in choosing the ideal wine and spirits, as an accompaniment to the chosen dish. This is known as pairing.

They are considered as the communicators of the senses, transmitting the true essence, aromas and flavors of wines and liquors. The sommelier carries out the following functions:

  • It offers recommendations for wines and drinks, such as waters, liqueurs, spirits and coffees.
  • Choose the content of the wine lists in bars and restaurants.
  • Organize wine and other alcoholic beverage tastings, as well as tastings.
  • Manages purchases and management of wine and liquor warehouses.
  • Control the storage conditions of the wines (temperature, humidity, light).
