The scientific entity reported that the direction of dispersion of the columns causes the collapse of fine material in areas located to the east and northeast, such as San Miguel Dueñas, Alotenango, Ciudad Vieja and Antigua Guatemala.

He explained that due to this situation, the descent of pyroclastic flows is generated, from the dome of the crater towards the northeast, east and southwest flanks.

In these addresses are the municipalities of Olintepeque, Salcajá, Almolonga, Cantel, Zunil, and Quetzaltenango, head of the department of the same name, he said.

The Insivumeh recommended that Civil Aeronautics take precautions with air traffic in the area of the Fuego and Santiaguito volcanoes.

This, he noted, due to the presence of ash on the perimeter, in a radius of at least 30 kilometers, at heights less than five thousand meters above sea level.

He called to consider the variability of wind direction at different heights and that accelerated currents can disperse ash over even greater distances.

He asked the Guatemalan Tourism Institute to instruct agencies, guides and visitors about the dangers posed by ascending and staying in the indicated areas.

He urged residents to attend to the evaluations that the authorities provide regarding the issue, both prevention and response, as well as not to remain near or within the channels that descend.

The National Geographic Institute highlights only 32 volcanoes in this Central American territory, the local Mountaineering Federation reports that there are 37, while the Insivumeh considers the remaining 287 “eruptive foci.”

Fuego, just 45 kilometers from this city, despite the time, remains one of the three most active volcanoes in Guatemala, along with Santiaguito and Pacaya, with its last eruption on May 4, 2023.
