The Social Democrats of the SPD, the formation of the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholzdescribed as “very bitter” this Sunday the third place that the party obtained in the European elections.

The SPD’s main candidate for the European Parliament (EP), Katarina Barley, said it was a “bitter afternoon” in his appearance at the party headquarters in Berlin. “We have all fought for a better result, we have not achieved it. We will analyze what happened, but today is not the time. Yes, I am disappointed, but I am sure that we will rise as a party,” she stressed.

The general secretary of the SPD, Kevin Kuhnertalso spoke of a “very bitter” result when making a first assessment on the first public television network, ARDafter granting Infratest dimap a forecast for this force of 14% of the votes, 1.8% less than in 2019.

The second public television network, ZDFof Forschungsgruppe Wahlen, also gives the Social Democrats 14%.

This way, This is the SPD’s worst electoral result in a European election.

Kühnert, who directly admitted that the SPD “has lost” this Sundaystressed that we will have to analyze “honestly” what has happened in these elections, in which Scholz’s coalition government – made up of social democrats, greens and liberals – has been punished at the polls.

He stressed that they will not look for “scapegoats” in the party when asked if Scholz should assume responsibilities, since in his opinion, it would be too simplistic to blame the result on a single person. “Together we must now look for what we should improve,” stated the general secretary of the SPD.

The SPD would be behind the Christian Democrats (30%) and the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which would have achieved between 16.0% and 16.5%.

According to polls, 520,000 voters who came from the SPD would have opted this Sunday by the new populist left party created by Sahra Wagenknechtwhich also added 410,000 votes from La Izquierda.

In total, Wagenknecht’s BSW would have garnered between 5.5% and 6% in the elections.
