The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, reiterated this Monday (06/10/2024) that he is in favor of Russia’s participation in the peace negotiations in Ukraine, during a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

Brazil will be absent from the summit on Ukraine to be held on June 15 and 16 in Burgenstok (Switzerland), at the initiative of kyiv and without Moscow. “On Ukraine, President Lula reiterated his defense of peace negotiations involving both sides of the conflict,” the Brazilian Presidency said in a statement, in which it stated that the president received “a call” from Putin in the morning.

The left-wing Brazilian president recalled that this position was “in line with the document signed” by his advisor on foreign affairs, Celso Amorim, with Chinese authorities in Beijing on May 23. In that joint statement, China and Brazil say they “support an international peace conference, to be held at an appropriate time, recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, with equal participation of all relevant parties, as well as a fair discussion of all plans.” of peace”.

Lula will travel to Europe for a meeting of the International Labor Organization (ILO) on June 13, in Geneva, before participating in the G7 summit in Italy, but will not attend the summit on Ukraine.

“Our position is that any peace discussion must involve both parties. This model that includes only one party has already been tried in this conflict and has not given any results,” he told the agency. AFP a Brazilian diplomatic source.

The president of the largest country in Latin America has caused controversy on several occasions by ensuring that responsibility for the conflict in Ukraine is shared, even though he has condemned the Russian invasion. Beijing and Brasilia try to position themselves as mediators in the Ukrainian war. Unlike Western nations, they have not imposed sanctions on Russia for its invasion.
