Some points about the foreign policy of the new president of Mexico

With Claudia Sheinbaum as the elected candidate to assume the position of the next presidency of Mexico, some of the guidelines of her foreign policy have already begun to stand out. In that sense, it is clear that the positions regarding relations with the United States and Latin America are some of the main premises that the world of international politics is eagerly awaiting.

The United States and the question of immigration policy

Following some recent statements by the president-elect, the United States has been among the first movements or discussions in the president’s sphere. In that sense, days ago she met with Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, the advisor to the president of the United States, Joe Biden, who left a message of her intention to continue and strengthen friendly relations, both as commercial and cooperation partners. Some points discussed at this meeting included issues of trade, security, entry of weapons from the United States to Mexico, and with special attention to migration.

Regarding this last point, Claudia Sheinbaum has indicated on several occasions that she recriminates the immigration laws that reinforce criminalization and that violate the human rights of migrants, as well as has declared that she will protect the citizens of Mexico who are on the other side. side of the border and support the United States economy.

Latin America

On the regional side, Sheinbaum has highlighted in his electoral proposals the strengthening of ties with Latin America and the Caribbean. In this regard, there are those who believe that diplomacy towards the region will continue. This highlights the proposal to institutionalize Regional Management of Human Mobility, which consists of the creation of a permanent regional mechanism that coordinates the countries of the region to share resources, knowledge and strategies that address migration in a comprehensive manner. But at the same time, the candidate faces a fragmented community and politics, defined by ideological change.

On the other hand, analysts assume that the president-elect will maintain López Obrador’s policy of non-interference in Venezuela’s affairs, as well as the cessation of sanctions imposed against the nation.

Greater presence of Mexico in the world

Finally, regarding Mexico’s position before the world, the president-elect has proposed strengthening the country’s place on the international stage. In that sense, some lines of work of the presidency range from implementing an inclusive mechanism for multi-sector participation, inter-institutional coordination, and improving coordination between the Foreign Ministry and other national institutions.
