(Special Envoy to Bari, Italy) – After participating as a guest at the G7 leaders’ summit, the president Javier Milei He arrived in Switzerland today to attend the Global Peace Summit, organized in that country by his counterpart from Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskywho will thank him for the support he received from the Argentine government in the context of the war against Russia.
As planned, the president and the delegation accompanying him on this international tour boarded the official plane this Saturday morning, took off from Bari at 9 a.m. local time (4 a.m. in Buenos Aires) and landed in Zurich two more hours. late.
In that place, the head of state will meet with his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Diana Mondinowho left for Swiss territory on Thursday at 6:00 p.m., so he has already been there for several hours, in charge of the preparations and in the midst of rumors about his future.
From Zurich, the Argentine delegation will travel to the city of Bürgenstock, in the center of the country, a mountainous area located in the middle of the Lake of the Four Cantons and which was the venue chosen for the summit headed by Zelensky.
In the short time he will be there, Milei will have a bilateral meeting with the Ukrainian president, who will present him with the decoration “Order of Liberty”for the support he received from his management.
Recently, in fact, the Government decided that Argentina joins the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG), an international coalition made up of 54 countries so far, which coordinates humanitarian and military aid to kyiv, in the midst of the war with the Kremlin.
According to official sources, this measure, which was signed by the Minister of Defense, Luis Petriin his first meeting with that group, was taken “with the objective of promoting international peace and stability.”
“As new members, we come with a spirit of learning and are committed to working closely with our international partners to achieve our shared goals of peace and stability,” the official highlighted to his colleagues.
The UDCG was created by the United States and its allies on April 26, 2022, two months after the start of the war, and until February 2023, its members committed $50 billion in security assistance, including tanks, armored vehicles, artillery and anti-aircraft defense systems.
National authorities stressed that joining this organization “strengthens bilateral ties with the United States and European nations, which could facilitate broader cooperation in economic, technological and defense areas.”
In addition, they noted that it also “positions the country alongside the main Western nations and aligned with NATO,” the powerful military entity that Argentina has already requested to join.
At the G7 meeting, in which Milei participated as a guest head of state, the leaders of the most developed nations in the world determined, among other issues, to grant a loan to the Ukrainian resistance of 46,000 million euros which will be financed with the interests generated from Russian assets frozen around the world, mostly in the European Union.
Likewise, they also announced their commitment to punish with “robust actions” the Chinese banks that are helping the Kremlin to avoid Western sanctions and the Chinese companies that help it access technology to manufacture weapons.
Zelensky himself was also invited to the meeting that took place at the luxurious Borgo Egnazia hotel complex, in the Italian region of Apulia, but he did not meet the Argentine president, since both spoke on different days.
