Linguist Noam Chomsky leaves hospital in Brazil – DW – 06/19/2024

The American linguist Noam Chomsky, one of the most influential intellectuals in the world, was discharged on Tuesday (06/18/2024) from a hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and will continue “treatment” at home, the medical center reported, later that false rumors about his death circulated on the Internet.

The Portuguese Charity of Sao Paulo indicated that “the patient Avran Noam Chomsky was discharged from the hospital to continue treatment at home,” the hospital reported, without detailing what type of treatment the 95-year-old intellectual and activist should follow.

According to the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper, Chomsky was hospitalized in the Brazilian city after suffering a stroke in June last year, which left him with speech difficulties and the right side of his body affected.

His wife Valeria Chomsky, who is Brazilian, took him to Sao Paulo in an ambulance plane with two nurses when it became possible to travel from the United States, the publication reported last week. The couple has had a residence since 2015 in the city.

The hospital note was published after information about the alleged death of the intellectual emerged in digital media and social networks.

Considered the founder of modern linguistics, Chomsky stated in his work “Syntactic Structures” (1957) that language is an innate faculty and that a “generative grammar”, a set of universal rules of language, is inscribed in the human brain.

But he became a central figure of the 20th and 21st centuries, especially for his role as a committed intellectual, in his radical criticism of the foreign policy of the United States and Israel and the media.
