Councilor Daniel Briceño, one of the most critical of the Petro government who received the highest vote precisely due to his complaints about hiring and appointments since August 7, 2022, comes from a very humble origin. The latest scandal that has just been uncovered is that of Andres Sarabia, the brother of the powerful director of Dapre, who went from earning $6 million as assistant to Green Party House Representative Andrés Osorio to living the high life. A visible change due to the superpower of his sister Laura in the Petro government.

His mother raised him alone and due to those same circumstances he studied in several public schools but graduated from La Giralda in the Las Cruces neighborhood in the town of Santa Fe. With the support of the entire family he studied law at El Externado.
La Giralda School is nominated among the best in the world in the World’s Best School Prizes of the T4 Education organization, for its commitment to the environment and promoting healthy lifestyles. Every year this global network of teachers allocates USD 250,000 as a prize for the most outstanding schools in different categories, distributing USD 50,000 to the winner of each category, making visible school initiatives that make a difference. It does not focus on famous schools and costs, which, at least in Bogotá, are not the ones that set the tone.
In addition to actions for the environment, they have four others which are collaboration with the community, innovation, overcoming adversity and promoting a healthy life. It is not the first time that a Colombian school is among the finalists. The Bogotá councilor wanted to pay tribute to his school and recorded this video while making the visit.
La Giralda was not the only winning school
But it was not La Giralda, the only recognized school. So was the Commercial Educational Institution of Envigado, which is also public and competes in the Environmental Action category against 9 other schools in the world. The pride of the Envigado Commercial IE is great because it is not the first time that its projects have been recognized. Of the eight times they have applied for the national Colombian Inventor award, they have taken first place on five occasions, four of them consecutive, with the last in December 2023. And they have been awarded in other spaces.
Two consecutive years with recognition for Colombian schools
In 2023, this same organization included among its 10 candidates for the ‘Actions for the Environment’ category, the same in which the Envigado school is now competing, the Municipal Montessori Educational Institution of Pitalito in the Department of Huila. This educational center managed to pass the filter to be among the 3 finalists and ended up being the absolute winner among all the schools in the world, which earned them the prize of USD 50 thousand.
Now, both the Comercial of Envigado and the Giralda of Bogotá will try to emulate what was done by the Montessori of Pitalito, but it will not be until September that they will know if they are among the three finalists and until October that the final winner of their respective categories will be announced. . They compete with schools from other countries such as Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Guatemala, Lebanon, Indonesia, Brazil, India and Belgium.
Vikas Pota, founder and CEO of T4 Education, said that the award for which they are today finalists celebrates “extraordinary schools that are transforming lives and shaping a better future for education.” Likewise, he indicated that Next September the three best in each category will be announced and the winners will be announced in November of this year.
