Ukraine on Monday accused Russia of intensifying attacks on the front lines with banned dangerous chemicalsincluding tear gas, the latest in a series of accusations of battlefield abuses.

Moscow and kyiv have accused each other of carrying out war crimes and deploy banned chemical munitions throughout the conflict in Ukraine, now in its third year.

The Ukrainian military said on Monday that it had registered 715 cases of use of ammunition containing “dangerous chemical compounds” by Russian forces in May.

This figure represents an increase of 271 cases compared to the previous monthand Russian forces primarily use grenades launched by drones to deploy these substances.

The medical facilities have received 1,385 visits from soldiers who had suffered “symptoms of chemical damage of varying severity”he added.

Ukraine said chemicals deployed by Russian forces – mainly CS gas- were primarily used by law enforcement, but were prohibited on the battlefield under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CAQ), which Moscow has ratified.

Last month, The United States accused Russia of having used chemical weapons against Ukrainian forcesan accusation that Moscow denied.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), based in The Hague, declared last month that the information it had received about the alleged use of chemical weapons in Ukraine was “insufficiently founded”.

However, the OPCW rated the “volatile” situation and “extremely concerning regarding the possible resurgence of the use of toxic chemicals as weapons.”
