“The attempt to undermine democratic institutions and the constitutional order is a reprehensible act that goes against the will of Bolivian citizens, and represents a threat to stability and peace in South America,” states the mechanism that integrates 12 countries. .

A statement from that group published today on the website of the Chilean Foreign Ministry reiterates the firm commitment to democratic principles and the defense of fundamental rights in South America and warns that they will remain vigilant against any attempt to violate them.

In January, Chile assumed the presidency of the Brasilia Consensus, an instrument created in 2023 at a meeting convened by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

This mechanism seeks to strengthen ties between South American nations, promote cooperation and project the voice of the subregion in the world, and is based on respect for the diversity of peoples, the defense of sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.

In Chile, the attempt to break the institutional order in Bolivia was rejected by the Government, legislators, political organizations and civil society.

Last Wednesday, former Army commander Juan José Zúñiga and Navy commander Juan Arnez, with hundreds of troops and tanks, occupied the epicenter of political power in Bolivia, Plaza Murillo, for about three hours.

The action was neutralized after Arce swore in the new members of the military high command.

In a message published on his X account, the Bolivian president deeply appreciated the support of his Chilean counterpart in the face of the failed coup d’état.

From Cochabamba, where he was participating in a meeting of the Andean Parliament, deputy Boris Barrera condemned the coup attempt and expressed his support for the president elected by the people.

“The stability and well-being of our nations depends on commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law,” he said.

Last September, Chile marked 50 years since the overthrow of the Popular Unity government, which gave way to a 17-year dictatorship and plunged the country into one of the darkest moments in its history.
