Cities with the best quality of life: Vienna leads the world ranking and Buenos Aires in Latin America

The Economist magazine made its annual ranking and revealed the drastic fall of Tel Aviv, which fell 20 places after the war in Gaza. For its part, Western Europe remains the most habitable region.

Like all years, The Economist revealed the ranking of the cities with the best quality of life in the world, something that surprised many. Although Vienna still occupies the first place, there were some significant changes, such as the drastic drop in Tel Aviv, in Israel, as a consequence of the war against Hamas in Loop.

The Austrian capital is perfect any way you look at it: it earned excellent scores in four of the index’s five categories, placing it in the first place in the ranking again. Three other European cities stood out in the top five: Copenhagen, Zurich and Geneva, making it clear that Western Europe remains the most habitable.

Even so, the analysis clarifies that their indexes of stability decreased by ”growing cases of protests”, from the rise of far-right extremism to the European Union’s agricultural policy and anti-immigration policies.

The named cities have a modest population sizewhich tends to significantly reduce the rates of criminality and allows citizens to enjoy systems of public transport less crowded. In it top ten they find each other Calgary and Vancouverboth in Canada, and Melbourne, Sydney, Osaka and Auckland, all from Asia and the Pacific.

For its part, Buenos Aires is not far behind and leads the Ranking of Latin America and the Caribbean. The annual survey of The Economist classifies 173 cities in five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

The most significant changes compared to last year were Tel Avivwhich dropped 20 places due to the war in Gaza, and Hong Kong, which rose 11, thanks to the improvement of its scores in stability and health.

Vienna He returned to the top spot this year, and won for Third year consecutive title of most livable city of the world. The Austrian capital earned perfect scores in four of the index’s five categories, but the lack of sports events important factors contributed to their lower 93.5 out of 100 in the category of culture and environment.

Meanwhile, Syria’s capital, Damascusdevastated by war, is still near the bottom of the table: it scored just 30.7 in 2024. As it was expected, Kyiv also performs poorly in this category, ranking among the bottom ten cities in the index for the second consecutive year, due to the war in Ukraine. The capital of Venezuela Caracasis also among the ten least habitable cities on the planet. Other cities at the bottom of the ranking are: Harare, Dhaka, Karachi, Lagos, Algiers and Tripoli.
