Madrid (EFE).- Spain has officially submitted to the International Court of Justice on Friday a declaration of intervention in the proceedings initiated by South Africa against Israel for genocide in the Gaza Strip, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a press release, the Ministry points out that Spain takes this step “out of its firm commitment to international law and to the work of the International Court of Justice” and with the intention of “contributing to the return of peace to Gaza and the East.” Half”.

“The goal is to end the war and begin to move forward with the implementation of the two-state system, which is the only guarantee that Palestinians and Israelis can live together in peace and security, and achieve stability in the entire region,” he added.

The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, announced on June 6 the decision to intervene in the procedure of the International Court of Justice initiated by South Africa, a decision formalized this Friday with the official presentation of the declaration of intervention.

Spain requests that the ICJ examine the obligation to prevent the commission of genocide

In the text, Spain stresses its interest in having the International Court of Justice examine the obligation to prevent the commission of genocide “due to the lack of access of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and the destruction of infrastructure,” the Ministry explains in its statement.

The Court also stressed that the precautionary measures ordered by the Court in this case are binding, including the cessation of the military operation in Rafah and access to humanitarian aid.

In this sense, the Ministry also recalls that the International Court of Justice has urged Israel to open the steps for aid to flow and the medicine, food, fuel and water that the Palestinians in Gaza need to reach the Strip. to survive.

Spain undertakes to abide by the ruling issued by the Court in the genocide process initiated by South Africa against Israel.
In addition to Spain, Colombia, Mexico and Palestine have used their right to present a declaration of intervention, while countries such as Ireland, Belgium and Chile have announced their intention to intervene.
