Ramón Esteve Estudio’s proposal has been the winner of the competition for the drafting of the Ciudad Real Biosanitary Campus project for the University of Castilla-La Mancha. The complex, dedicated to medicine and biomedical research, is located on a plot strategically located in the vicinity of the General University Hospital of Ciudad Real, completing the consolidated urban fabric.
Each component has its own programmatic identity, converging in an interconnection that promotes interdisciplinary collaboration. The set merges with the environment by reflecting the combination of earthy and light tones present in the nearby buildings. The general arrangement of the buildings on the plot follows an efficient distribution pattern, adopting the shape of a comb oriented from north to south. The buildings dedicated to teaching and research are found in this arrangement, while the buildings intended for general services are located perpendicularly, acting as a limit with the access plaza.
The buildings are distinguished by their simple and functional design, following an organizational scheme that maximizes access to natural light. In addition, they are highly flexible and adaptable to programmatic redistributions.
The proposal seeks to build buildings with a reduced carbon footprint during their life cycle. To achieve this, bioclimatic design strategies are implemented to minimize energy demand, optimize the design and selection of materials, and install photovoltaic solar energy. The objective is to achieve the ZEB (Zero Energy Building) category in energy consumption and ZCB (Zero Carbon Building) in carbon emissions.
The project is co-financed with FEDER funds from the 20-21/27 operational program and with contributions from the Community Board of Castilla la Mancha.
