Description submitted by the project team. The project is located in the small town of Mogrovejo, declared a historic-artistic complex in 1985, located in the Picos de Europa, more specifically in the Ándara Massif and in front of Mount Subiedes. The location in the lower part of the urban center allows it to be separated from the rest of the buildings and enjoy its image with the mountains as a backdrop. The small existing construction was a small stable on the ground floor with the hayloft on the upper floor following the traditional scheme of vernacular architecture. The owners Carmen and José Félix inherited the building that was already disused and decided to enhance it by converting it into two apartments that would give new life to the construction.
It was decided to maintain the division by floors, locating an apartment on each one and connecting both through the staircase space, which is the common access area. This space becomes one of the protagonists, where the aim is to create an entrance hall as a patio where traditional elements such as the stone of the masonry walls and the wooden roof are combined with contemporary elements such as the staircase. steel or the wood and glass screen. The apartments seek to maintain the character of the spaces pre-existing the work. The upper floor, formerly the hayloft, is a taller and almost open space where light and the roof are the protagonists. The ground floor, however, where cattle were formerly kept in winter, has a more moderate height, where the original pillars and beams, as well as the openings that connect with the outside, quickly attract the visitor’s attention.
