The Museum of Costa Rican Art (MAC) will exhibit, starting this June 14 and until September 1, the works of the Franco-Venezuelan artist, Carlos Cruz-Diez. Known as “the master of color,” the exhibition is a tribute to his legacy as a pioneer of kinetic and optical art.

The exhibition “RGB: The Colors of the Century” contains a collection of 16 reproductions that highlight three of the eight investigations carried out by Cruz-Diez throughout his life. In this way, the exhibition recognizes the artist’s work on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.

The acronym RGB refers to three colors, by their names in English: red, green and blue. These primary colors serve to represent any color by combining them. If all three are superimposed, the color white is obtained. And by combining them in different intensities, more than 16 million different colors can be created and that is what this exhibition highlights.

Precisely, this is part of what the viewer will see in each work: a variation of compositions that use these three colors. With movement, the person will visually experience the appearance and disappearance of tones.

The director of the Museum of Costa Rican Art, Esteban Calvo, stated that “having in the MAC rooms this innovative thematic and educational exhibition created by Carlos Cruz-Diez in Paris in 2014, with a printable format that eliminates the need to transfer works or perform complex assemblies, thus facilitating the work of the curators and museum staff and designed by maestro Cruz-Diez to adapt perfectly to spaces suitable for roaming, such as ours, it not only offers a striking visual experience but also provides a significant social, educational and cultural value, enriching the artistic panorama of the country and promoting access to quality international art for all visitors to the Museum.”

“We are very happy to bring part of the work of maestro Carlos Cruz-Diez to the country, through an exhibition that will be exhibited for free in the museum. In addition, we are proud to bring art to the streets of Josefina through the intervention of pedestrian crossings where thousands of Costa Ricans will be able to enjoy the art of the master of color,” commented Andrea Aguilar, head of Community Initiative at EPA, the company in charge of coordinating this exhibition in our country.

It is the first time that this exhibition is presented in Central America and the second time in Latin America, after having passed through Caracas, Venezuela. The works have already visited cities such as Shanghai and Seoul, among others.

The works in this exhibition were created from 1960 onwards.

Streets in full color

Cruz Diez’s work will also fill the streets of San José with color. It involves the intervention of two public spaces through the creation of ephemeral paths so that Josefina passersby can enjoy outdoor art.

The first of these steps will be located in front of the Buenaventura Corrales school – known as the metal building. The second intervention will be on the esplanade of the Museum of Costa Rican Art.

The purpose of these interventions in public places is to bring the art of this renowned artist to Costa Ricans and awaken people’s interest in the exhibition, as well as to fill more spaces in the capital city with color.

It is proven that art in public spaces transforms the urban environment, brings culture closer to people, and also beautifies and creates a unique and accessible experience for everyone.

These interventions are supervised by Carlos Cruz Diez’s atelier and supported by EPA volunteers.

The Museum of Costa Rican Art is located on the east side of La Sabana Metropolitan Park, in San José, and its hours are Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Admission is free to the public.
