The essential books to know Immanuel Kant, one of the key philosophers in history

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) has gone down in history as one of the most relevant philosophers of modern Europe and universal philosophy; in addition to being the first and most important representative of Criticism and the precursor of German Idealism. He is known mainly for his contributions to the theory of reason, morality and politics, all through important works such as the ‘Critique of Pure Reason’ or the ‘Critique of Judgment’. This 2024 marks 300 years since the birth of this thinker, and from EDUCATION 3.0 we have compiled some of the best editions of his works as well as books related to his life and legacy.

Critique of pure reason

His most universal work undertakes a systematic but devastating criticism of metaphysics and the arguments with which it is supported. Its central objective is to achieve a definitive answer as to whether this can be considered a science. Among other things, Kant tries to overcome David Hume’s criticism of the epistemological foundation of the principle of causality, which did not have a satisfactory answer until his time. In this edition, carefully revised by Pedro Ribas, notable modifications have been introduced, seeking greater precision in the vocabulary, expanding the analytical index and including new introduction, chronology and bibliography. As in the previous editions, the text of the original second edition has been taken as a basis and in the margins of the text the references corresponding to the pagination of the two German editions are included.

Kant’s whirlwind

In this work, Norbert Bilbeny offers an informative introduction to the life, ideas and work of the greatest philosopher of reason who opened the door to modernity. To do so, it frames the life and work of this Enlightenment philosopher in the social and political context in which his discreet personality and prolific pen developed: from family deprivation and the arduous path to academic recognition through his conflict with religion and his peers, without ignoring his exposure and affinity to the ideals of the French Revolution. Bilbeny alternates the biographical chronicle with the translation of Kantian ideas and concepts into accessible terms and demonstrates the extreme relevance of the German thinker. For the emeritus professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Barcelona, his famous message “Dare to think” continues to cross the sky of ideas like a whirlwind to touch down and change our way of seeing the world and the human soul. Therefore, if we must return to his work, it is to dedicate a calm and patient rereading to it, in order to remember what is in danger today – freedom, morality, the human being – and find the keys to sustain it.

Kant: ontology and beauty

Kant’s thought also revolves around ontology in an intention to get closer to understanding being. Kant sees it as the inevitable creator of illusions that incite us to believe that we know being in itself. Furthermore, beauty does not escape this illusion and is addressed by the philosopher in another of his works, ‘Critique of Judgment’. Thus, in this account of the critical period, he answers the perennial question of Western Aesthetics: the relationship between being and beauty. From this approach, Kant’s reflection on beauty and taste goes beyond the themes of the philosophy of art and addresses an eminently metaphysical topic: the ontology of beauty.

Criticism of the trial

The type of reasons that make reading this work stimulating go beyond the academic field and make the ‘Critique of Judgment’ one of the most decisive theoretical references in the discussion about the origins and various developments of modernity. Thus, it addresses the faculty that enables human beings to judge, discovered by Kant in the first part of this book, and which is none other than the expansion of the way of thinking as a result of comparing one’s own judgment with the judgments of others.
