Juan Manzanares presents his latest book ‘The walls of Canton: 150 years later’

The writer Juan Manzanares He presented his latest book yesterday ‘The walls of Canton: 150 years later’a text in which he summarizes what happened in Cartagena in those six months, revealing the events of the Cantonal Uprising.

The event was presented by the well-known Cartagena actor and film producer José Antonio Ortas Cayuelacandidate twice for the Goya Awards in the categories of ‘Best Newcomer’ in 2015 and ‘Best Supporting Actor’ in 2016.

Ortas The writer has highlighted the collaborations he makes with various local media outlets where he comments on a summary of what happened throughout the history of the city. “Researcher, scholar and lecturer on the history of Cartagena, this is his second book, after ‘Anniversaries of Cartagena’published in December 2022.”

In his presentation, Juan Manzanares He has explained that his book consists of two stories written in unison and that they both support each other, and one cannot be understood without the other.

The first talks about the six months that elapsed from July 12, 1873 to January 12, 1874, the time that the Cantonal Uprising lasted. “Exactly six months, but its events are told as a historical poem and for which I have based myself on publications and sources of the time with the aim that what I have written has been adjusted to the true reality of what happened. at that time”.

The second tells the life of some created characters, but incorporated into the Canton, “with whom I intend to convey to the reader the feelings that were experienced in Cartagena during that intense time. Finally, I include the biographies of these characters that I have extracted from the archives of the Royal Academy of History. Truly, what I have intended in writing my book is to show something more than what was really experienced in Cartagena during the months that the Uprising lasted.”

The presentation of the book, framed in the cultural program of ‘Read, think, imagine’ of the Department of Culture, was held in the Josefina Soria library of the Ramón Alonso Luzzi Cultural Center where, at the end, readers took the opportunity for the author to sign copies of his work.
