The International Book Fair in Quito (FILQ) 2024 begins this June 8. Meet the guest authors and activities.

This Saturday, June 8, the doors of the International Book Fair (FILQ) 2024. It will be for nine days, until Sunday, June 16, at the Municipal Convention Center (Bicentennial Park).

The cultural event is organized by the Ministry of Culture of Ecuador in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of Colombia. Admission is free.

The motto of this edition is ‘Crossroad‘and seeks to promote diversity of ideas and creativityin a space for meeting, debate and reflection on the present and the future through books.

In addition, the FILQ will pay tribute to the centenary of the publication of ‘The Maelstrom’ by José Eustasio Rivera, a work that is recognized as a classic of Latin American literature.

The fair will be divided into four auditoriums: one for talks and book presentationstwo for the children’s and youth areaand in the last auditorium the music, dance and theater performances.

Total, 300 activities will be carried outbetween them workshops, artistic presentations, mediated readings and book presentations. Below are more details of what they will offer:

Guest authors

There will be the presence of 74 guests from Quito, 23 of provinces and more than 80 international authorsamong which more than 10 Colombian authors are included.

These authors were selected by the national and international awards who have received their books, because they have been translated in the last two yearsdue to its wide track record of academic publications and also because they have been organizers of cultural activities and book fairs.

Workshops

The workshops are divided into the FILQ sections so that All public can enjoy them and to participate you must go to quitocultura.com and register for the forms that are published:

  • Children’s space: writing workshop for children and literature workshop based on ‘La Vorágine’
  • Youth space: writing workshop and digital content workshop taught by content creators
  • Adult space: editing workshop, writing workshop, literary agency workshop and participation in conferences

Cultural presentations

At the FILQ they will also present various artistsboth at the opening event on June 8 and throughout the Fair:

  • Yavirac, from Ecuador
  • Men of Clay, from Colombia
  • Edson Velandia, from Colombia
  • The Bolivian embassy will present Bolivian dances
  • Tumbex Pax, from Mexico

The director of the Metropolitan Library Network, Santiago Vizcaíno, tells PRIMICIAS that this fair is the first International Fair organized by the Secretariat and what differentiates it from previous editions is that this one offers activities that aim to enter the international circuit.

In addition, he commented that the dates were strategically selected so that it would take place after the Book Fair in Buenos Aires and before Lime and thus be able to capture the attention of more audiences.

Vizcaíno hopes to achieve several objectives after FILQ, both for national and international authors and for the public:

  • Expand knowledge about what is produced in Ecuador
  • Dynamize the publication in other countries
  • let there be more Ecuadorian presence at international literary events.
  • Increase by editions, translations and productions
  • Encourage more people to attend Book Fairs
