MIAMI, Florida – This Sunday, among the colorful murals of Wynwood, you can listen to mariachi music, eat barbacoa and al pastor tacos, and toast margaritas. It is Cinco de Mayo and although what is commemorated on this date is a military victory, the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, in the United States it is considered the Mexican holiday par excellence.

“Customers are ordering a lot of margaritas and we are having a great time,” said Ana Laura, a bar employee in Wynwood Marketplace, laughing. “I came with my cousins, who are Mexican and are visiting Florida for the first time. We feel at home, because they have decorated the place with the colors that represent our country,” said Fernanda, who was born in Miami.

Cinco de Mayo is one of the five days of the year when most alcoholic beverages are consumed in the United States, generating a significant boost for the restaurant and entertainment industry.

This year the celebration took on an additional dimension thanks to the Formula 1 Grand Prix that comes to Miami for the third time. “It was exciting that they selected Miami, which is an important city, and that the race coincided with this match. Double celebration,” said Luis, a fan. “This further consolidates the international attractiveness of South Florida, and that more and more people come to consume and boost tourism,” he added.

Last year, the event is estimated to have generated a local economic benefit of $449 million, reaffirming Miami as a major hub for global sporting events.
