Aena has updated its regulations regarding the amount of liquids allowed in hand luggage, thanks to the introduction of new scanners with 3D X-ray technology at airports. This measure, established in 2006 as a security measure against possible terrorist threats, will allow passengers to keep liquids in their carry-on luggage without having to remove them during security checks.

The first tests in Spain will be carried out at the Barajas and El Prat airports, and the technology is expected to expand to other airports in the country, such as Palma de Mallorca and Málaga-Costa de Sol, in the coming years. By 2026, it is expected to be implemented in several additional airports, including those in Gran Canaria, Tenerife South, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Menorca, Bilbao, Alicante-Elche, Valencia and Ibiza.

New security checks at airports

Aena plans to modernize security controls at Spanish airports with the implementation of new filters with 3D X-ray technology. These filters will be installed first at the Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat airports, which represent 40% of passenger traffic. They will then gradually be extended to the rest of the airports in the network, starting with Palma de Mallorca at the end of 2024.

This measure seeks improve safety more efficiently and comfortably for passengers. In addition to the new security filters, Aena will also implement biometric access systems and automated lines for the management of hand luggage.

The remote inspection system will allow security guards to carry out their work from a room, without having to be physically in the security filter, while ATRS will automate the management and return of trays and separate suspicious bags of those that are not.

Total, Aena will invest 1,170 million euros in physical security during the decade 2018-2028, including the renewal of baggage inspection equipment in the hold and security filters. This will involve the acquisition of 261 pieces of equipment and the works necessary for its integration.

Scanners using this technology are already being tested in the UK main airportsand the British government is expected to amend safety regulations so that they will be fully operational in 2024.

At the European level, the European Commission has expressed its interest in easing the restrictions imposed after the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is also backing the proposal to gradually relax security restrictions at airports, suggesting a trend toward greater flexibility in air security protocols globally.

New security filters

Aena is investing in the modernization of security filters at its main airports to improve passenger experience and optimize security processes.

EDSCBs are x-ray machines that generate 3D images to inspect hand luggage, preventing passengers from removing electronic devices and liquids from their bags. Aena has opted for this technology to improve customer service and optimize security.

ATRS separates suspicious bags in the security filter and manages the trays automaticallywhile the remote inspection system allows baggage to be inspected from a separate room, without the physical presence of the security guard at the filter.

They are also using the remote inspection systemwhich allows inspections to be carried out from a separate room, without the physical presence of the security guards in the security filter.

These improvements are part of a broader project to modernize security filters at Aena airportswhich includes the implementation of biometric systems for access to controls, as well as the acquisition of more modern furniture and larger spaces to improve passenger comfort

Liquids

Starting in 2024, The limit of 100 milliliters for liquids in hand luggage will remain in force at airports. This implies that bath gels, perfumes, deodorants or other liquids must be in containers of no more than 100 milliliters, and these must be placed in a transparent plastic bag with a closing system and a maximum capacity of one liter. This protocol applies to items such as perfume, cream, gel, shampoo, lotions, jams, toothpaste, among other liquids and mixtures of similar consistency.

Liquid medicines or special diets necessary during the trip can also be carried in hand luggage, but it is recommended bring the medical prescription or corresponding justification. It is important to note that security personnel may require inspection of containers with liquids, and if the inspection is not passed or not permitted, they may be removed.

After passing security checks, drinks, cosmetics or perfumes purchased in airport stores They can be carried in luggage, as long as they remain in the approved and sealed security bags, which include the purchase receipt.
