The development of new engines powered by environmentally friendly fuels has become one of the priorities for industries, governments and global organizations. Now, a company is taking the lead in this crusade with an initiative that aims to cover up to 40% of the market by manufacturing hydrogen cars.

The fuel of the future is already here

The company Stellantis, a European-American conglomerate that already has 350 zero-emission cars manufactured in its plants, is the company that is leading an ambitious project to change the automotive market. Their commitment to caring for the environment has allowed them to position themselves as a giant in the sector worldwide.

Currently, the production plant has provided, among other countries, Mexico with the first pick-up with a fuel cell engine for a RAM 5500 model that could boost sustainability in big engines. These hydrogen cars will be manufactured in the territory and will be a variant of the traditional engine that promises to accelerate the change towards green mobility in Latin America.

Against this background, Stellantis has set about expanding its manufacturing plant in Poland to produce larger engines and reach a capacity for about 100,000 hydrogen cars. This could displace electric motors as a sustainable alternative for mobility with all the drawbacks that entail.

When do you plan to introduce your hydrogen engines?

Stellantis’ goal is to have its Polish plant fully operational by 2030, offering a cheap car alternative with renewable and ecological fuel that would quickly fill the market. With this project, the company not only makes clear its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, but could turn it into a profitable market.

Electric cars produced today have problems in terms of the essential components of their batteries and fuel cells, and are more expensive. Hydrogen, on the other hand, is a gas that is abundant in all materials on our planet and that offers great power and autonomy, making it a much more attractive alternative.

Hydrogen cars are the future

Hydrogen fuel not only has potential as a replacement for fossil fuels and electric motors, but also facilitates a scalable shift towards this renewal.

Automotive plants could progressively adapt their production processes by adapting internal combustion engines to the use of this noble gas. Hybrid engines can even be produced that can gradually displace gasoline to avoid a negative impact on the economy of each region.

One of the major drawbacks of sustainable cars is their low-scale production due to their limited market capacity. With a production capacity of this size, hydrogen cars could begin the first steps towards mass production, which would reduce costs and make their implementation easier.

The possibility of selling hydrogen cars with hybrid engines means that a drastic change in fuel marketing will not be required, allowing the progressive installation of service stations that little by little incorporate hydrogen. The existing infrastructure could be adapted without the inconvenience of, for example, increasing electricity consumption.

The end of electric cars?

Until now, car manufacturers have focused on electric cars to comply with new sustainability regulations that apply around the world. Now, with developments like this hydrogen engine that can even power an airplane, it seems to be increasingly clear that hydrogen will be the fuel of the future.
