A new inspection was carried out with representatives of the federal government and executives of Fraport Brasil, the company that manages the main air terminal in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

The terminal was heavily affected by the recent floods in Rio Grande do Sul and state deputy Frederico Antunes reported that, through the general director of Fraport Brasil, Andreea Pal, he learned that the airport will not be able to reopen before the first fortnight of the last month of the year.

This deadline will only be plausible if works at the Porto Alegre airport begin this month.

Thus, in an official statement, Fraport Brasil leaves open the deadline for the return of operations at the Porto Alegre airport and says that the cleaning phase has already begun and should last approximately 45 days.

The concessionaire also reports that at the beginning of July it will probably be possible to detail the intervention needs on the road.

While the Porto Alegre Airport does not open, a large part of the commercial air operations in Rio Grande do Sul are being carried out at the Canoas Airport.

Different tests and surveys have also already begun to evaluate the resistance of the soil, from compaction to the pavement, so that it is technically possible to confirm the impacts caused by the accumulation of water during recent weeks.

This trial period is expected to last approximately 45 days, depending on weather conditions. It is estimated that at the beginning of July the needs for interventions on the track will be detailed.

Since the waters began to recede, Fraport Brasil has been in constant contact with insurance companies to evaluate the scenario, receiving recurring inspections and carrying out an inventory of all the elements that were impacted.

Andrea Pal, CEO of Fraport Brazil, evaluates the meeting and the inspection as positive for the next steps: ‘we are working with the Federal Government to accelerate the resumption of the airport. We are doing our part with several activities that have already begun. If the impacts are less than initially anticipated, let’s hope the airport will be available by the end of the year,’ she detailed.
