The extensive use by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) ground forces of the Orion rugged mobile terminal has positively affected combat in Gaza in the ongoing war.

The system has been developed by Israeli company Asio Technologies and enables off-grid and on-grid mission planning, real-time navigation and enhanced situational awareness using Geographic Information System (GIS) database and tracking capabilities. Augmented Reality (AR). It serves both the individual soldier and the commander down to the battalion level, allowing them to receive real-time updates to each other on friendly and hostile forces, as well as other mission-critical information.

According to David Harel, CEO of Asio Technologies, ORION can securely communicate and interact with other Asio Technologies tactical solutions, such as the LYNX portable multi-functional situational awareness tactical system, to provide a fully integrated tactical combat suit for ground forces. LYNX is a day/night tactical augmentation system for combat commanders that features powerful computer vision algorithms to improve tactical operation and situational awareness and reduce cognitive load. Totally versatile, it allows the exchange of the Field of View (FOV) and the Infrared detector (IR) and a versatile configuration of the Laser Rangefinder (LRF).

The newest version of the LYNX has a new configuration and improved capabilities. The new LYNX features Asio Technologies’ new Geo Fusion core, which offers highly accurate real-time image-to-map transformation, enabling augmentation and pointing, along with advanced AI capabilities. Altogether, it improves users’ situational awareness and mission robustness. The updated hardware features an advanced sensor core with a next-generation 12u LWIR (long wave infrared) pixel sensor, a narrow beam LRF, an internal rechargeable battery, and advanced orientation and positioning sensors. The LYNX’s newest architecture is 30% smaller and 20% lighter than its predecessor, making it the most advanced and compact portable tactical augmentation system developed specifically for junior commando and field warfighters.

Harel says the Orion is widely used by the IDF and is assisting combat units fighting the Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza.

“This system can be used for online data exchange and also to support missions according to pre-established plans.”

Harel added that interest in the system has increased as a result of the war in Ukraine and now the ongoing war in Gaza. “Armies understand the crucial capabilities of these systems on the very complex battlefield.”
