The Monthly Manufacturing Survey with a Territorial Approach (Emmet), carried out by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (Dane), revealed this Friday that The Colombian manufacturing industry experienced moderate growth in April 2024.

In the annual analysis of April 2024 compared to April 2023, the survey showed that The real production of the Colombian manufacturing industry showed an increase of 4.1%. Likewise, real sales grew by 4.3%, although employed personnel showed a decrease of 1.1%.

Of the 39 industrial activities evaluated, 22 registered increases in their real production, contributing 6.4 percentage points to the total annual variation. On the other hand, 17 showed decreases in production, subtracting 2.3 percentage points from the global variation.

Significant increases were highlighted in manufacturing of transportation equipment (26.2%), other manufacturing (19.7%), iron and steel (16%), cocoa, chocolate and confectionery (16%), and electrical appliances and equipment (14.7%) . The other side of the coin was experienced by activities with negative production such as manufacturing of vehicles and their engines (-30.0%), sugar and panela (-25.1%), manufacturing of glass and derived products (-19.1% ), and manufacturing of vehicle bodies (-18.3%).

Throughout the first four months of 2024, real production in the manufacturing industry fell by 3.5%while real sales decreased by 3.3% and employed personnel decreased by 1.3%.

Of the industrial sectors analyzed, 30 experienced drops in production, subtracting 4.7 percentage points from the total variation for the year until Aprilwhile 9 subsectors showed increases, adding 1.2 percentage points.

For its part, during the last twelve months (May 2023 – April 2024), the real production of the manufacturing industry presents a negative variation of 5.4%. In addition, Real sales in the manufacturing sector have accumulated a drop of 4.6% in the last year. And the number of employed personnel has decreased, with a negative variation of 1.5%.

Of the 39 industrial activities, 34 registered negative variations in their real production, subtracting 6.4 percentage points, while the remaining 5 activities had positive variations, together adding 0.9 percentage points to the total variation.

Regarding performance by region, Emmet showed that, Of the 14 department domains evaluated, 9 recorded positive variations in actual productionadding 5.7 percentage points to the national variation.

For example, in April 2024, The metropolitan area of ​​Valle de Aburrá, with its capital Medellín, stood out with an increase of 4.8% in real production, contributing 0.7 percentage points to the total national variation of 4.1%.

However, so far this year until April 2024, the Aburrá Valley presented a 6.4% decrease in real production, subtracting 0.9 percentage points from the national variation of -3.5%. During the last twelve months, this same region showed a drop of 8.6%, subtracting 1.3 percentage points from the national variation of -5.4%.
