The jackpot winner must choose between two forms of payment: an annualized prizewhich consists of an immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year, or a one-time payment equivalent to cash value.
Both prize options are before taxes. Once the prize is won, the winner will be deducted 24%. Additionally, you would have to pay the top federal tax rate of 37%. You will also need to pay state taxes if the state in which you purchased your ticket taxes lottery winnings or charges income taxes.
When are the Mega Millions drawings held?
This lottery is available in almost every state in the country, except Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah. It can also be played in the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands. It is not available in Puerto Rico. Drawings take place every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 pm ET (8:00 pm PT/10:00 pm CT).
