The American e-commerce giant Amazon redoubles its commitment to the German market, Europe’s main economy despite the fact that it is now in low hours. The group announced yesterday investments of 10 billion euros in Germany to expand its logistics network and, above all, increase its data center infrastructure with which to meet the growing demand for services clouddriven by the pull of the artificial intelligence (AI) business.

The megaplan has been announced just a month after revealing other 7.8 billion investment to create AWS European Sovereign Cloud, whose first region will open in Brandenburg, so technology will invest a total of 17.8 billion euros in Germany.

From the project unveiled yesterday, Amazon will allocate 8.8 billion to the development of Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure in the Rhine-Main area until 2026. The remaining 1.2 billion will go to logistics, robotics and corporate headquarters. The company indicated that it will open three new logistics centers in the country, in the towns of Grossenkneten (Lower Saxony), Erfurt (Thuringia) and Horn-Bad Meinberg (North Rhine Westphalia); two new corporate headquarters in Munich and Berlin; and will expand its R&D center in Berlin.

The American technology company foresees reach 40,000 employees by the end of the year in the German market, with an increase of 4,000 workers compared to 2023.

The German chancellor, Olaf Scholz Yesterday, he celebrated the 17.8 billion that Amazon will invest in the country, both for job creation and the innovation they entail. “As a federal government we are working on exactly this: strengthening our competitiveness,” he stated.

Investments in Spain

The technology company is launching multi-million dollar plans in recent months to open data centers in several countries in Europe. In May, AWS, Amazon’s cloud subsidiary, announced that it will invest 15.7 billion in Spain over the next decade to expand its data center infrastructure in Aragon. The plan, which consolidates Spain as an important digital node in Europe, represents the group’s largest investment commitment in southern Europe to date.

The bet occurs in a context of sharp increase in investments by digital giants to support their ambitions in artificial intelligence (AI)which will skyrocket the consumption of cloud computing services.
